Support Race Programme Qualifying

Qualifying for the races on the Suncity Group 64th Macau Grand Prix support programme took place today ahead of two days of racing.

CTM Macau Touring Car Cup – 1600cc Turbo and over 1950cc

Friday’s qualifying sessions for the 1600cc Turbo and over 1950cc classes of the CTM Macau Touring Car Cup determined which 36 drivers – the 18 fastest in each group – will start Sunday’s 12-lap race.

It was Japan’s Mitsuhiro Kinoshita in a Nissan GTR R34 who took pole position. Lining up alongside him will be Macao’s Leong Ian Veng in a Mitsubishi EVO 9, having set a quickest time that was just 0.364 off Kinoshita’s pole-setting lap of 2m33.426.

Hong Kong driver Paul Poon in a Peugeot RCZ was the quickest of the 1600cc Turbo group. Last year’s winner will start the race from the second row as he sets out on the hunt for a seventh CTM Macau Touring Car Cup victory. Starting alongside Poon will be Macao driver Filipe C. De Souza, who, at the wheel of a Chevrolet CRUZE, was just three-tenths of a second behind Poon in the 1600cc Turbo qualifying.

Suncity Group Chinese Racing Cup

China’s Zhang Zhi Qiang will start tomorrow’s Suncity Group Chinese Racing Cup from pole position having topped the time sheets in today’s qualifying session. While compatriot David Zhu had taken provisional pole earlier in the session, Zhang set a time of 2m39.945 in his Baic D50 TCR with just minutes remaining on the clock.

Third fastest in the session was Hong Kong’s Kenneth Look, while Helder Assunção was the quickest Macao driver and will start alongside Look on the second row for tomorrow’s race.
