Macao’s Leong Ian Veng won today’s CTM Macau Touring Car Cup in a Mitsubishi EVO 9, taking victory ahead of Japanese driver Mitsuhiro Kinoshita in a Nissan GTR R34 in challenging, wet conditions. Third on the podium was Colombia’s Julio Acosta in a Lotus EVORA. With this year’s long-running race for both 1600cc Turbo and over 1950cc cars, it was Macao driver Jeronimo Badaraco in a Chevrolet Cruze who was the first of the 1600cc turbo group to cross the line, just 0.392 seconds ahead of rival Paul Poon of Hong Kong in a Peugeot RCZ.
As the morning rain continued, the race started from behind the safety car. When racing began on lap 3, Leong, who stayed alongside pole-man Kinoshita, moved into the lead and the two cars began to pull away from the chasing pack. Meanwhile, in the 1600cc Turbo class, the battle between Poon and Badaraco was intensifying. While Poon held off Badaraco, the Macao driver continued to pile on the pressure and eventually got past his rival.
While Leong continued to hold the lead, Kinoshita was closing in and, by the end of lap 7, had narrowed the gap to just two seconds. On the next lap, Kinoshita set the fastest lap of the race, reducing Leong’s lead to just 1.862 seconds.
However, Kinoshita’s hopes of mounting a further challenge were dashed when, soon afterwards, a multi-car incident at Dona Maria brought out the red flags. With eight laps complete, the race was not resumed and Leong was declared the winner.
